Just A Thought

As I was sojourning on my way to work this morning, a funny thought popped into my mind. I wonder what will happen if our politicians would actually step down from their sheltered pedestals and out of their comfortable bubbles and be one with us MASAs even for just a day.

Will they be more effective in making and implementing those projects and laws?

When I was in high school, my teachers would say how immersion can actually change one’s perspective. In college, a professor once told me that continuous exposure will ground and remind you in case you forget.

If they would ride a PUV, say the jeepney, even just once a month, would they notice those kids who would wipe the passengers’ shoes in return for some coins?

Or how completely unwalkable most of our sidewalks are. Try walking from Makati Ave. to the Buendia MRT station. @#$%&*!!! There are parts of that sidewalk that’s either too narrow for 2 people to walk side by side on or the cemented path is too cracked that a mis-step would mean a trip to the Orthopedic hospital.

Or the relatively new, newly erected steel overpasses that already have holes on the walkways? If you’re not careful, the metal flooring might just give way and let you experience free-fall to the highway below.

Or how about braving the traffic of the metro without hagads or police escorts?

I think that’s what our politicians need, immersion and constant exposure. It just might re-aquaint them as to what their jobs are all about. They’ll see how much work needs to be done and how focused they need to be. Afterall, they are spending a lot of hard-earned money, OUR money.
