Diction and Pronounciation

These are two words that get misused so many times. Especially here in the Philippines and I don’t know exactly why. I get irritated since many celebrities on TV exchanges one for the other. Yes, on TV. And they feel mighty proud of it, too, not knowing that they just made a booboo in front of so many viewers.

To set the record straight, here’s the meaning of these two words.

pronunciation n. The act or manner of pronouncing words; utterance of speech. A way of speaking a word, especially a way that is accepted or.

diction n. From the word Dictionary; choice of words to fit their context

But now, even dictionary sites mistakes one for the other, too. But if you check out your old dictionary for the REAL meaning of the words, you’ll see them defined differently.

Guys, what do you think?

Very true that there are media personalities that are irksome especially when the words are so trivial that even elementary students should know those words and right pronunciation.

If you are Visayan or Ilocano or Kapampangan, by all means, stick with your tongue but if you speak English, might as well do it right before doing it on air via regular shows. Actors and actresses are being looked up to by the current generation, even as young as pre-schoolers. Don’t stop learning if you are still lacking.

Spelling and grammar should also be improved. I’m not looking down on people who err on those areas. All I’m saying is, there’s always room for improvement. That’s how we learn.

Ex. you don’t say ‘pronounciation’ because it is spelled ‘proNUNciation. A common mistake.

    Oh, another common mistake:
    - you don’t say ‘not unless’ because that is a double negative…you really meant ‘unless’ only.

    - irregardless is another double negative.

    :) cheers, and peace… :)
